Students will engage in an interactive, hands-on lesson demonstrating how to combat implicit bias and stereotypes. They will explore the relationship of any personal underlying attitudes and perceptions a person may have for or against student outcomes. This activity will utilize a rubric to prevent biases while increasing transparency and consistency in grading and mitigating personal preferences. When designed and used correctly, rubrics can serve as a strong communication tool between the teacher and student that can promote a growth mindset, self-awareness and achievement-driven behavior.

Teaching for All

Students will engage in an interactive, hands-on lesson with a focus on effectively integrating the concepts of educational psychology into the teaching profession. Students then partake in a brief personality assessment and a STEM-based team building activity, working in groups to construct a small marshmallow catapult. After further exploring the impact of traits on strengths and weaknesses as an educator, they will reflect on how their personality traits may have influenced team dynamics in the STEM activity.

The Power of Stories

For the Power of Storytelling LIVE Lesson, students will engage in a writing activity that will teach them about the application of creative writing techniques and structures. They will also learn through practice that communication is about developing and delivering information effectively.
