GCU Live Lessons

GCU LIVE Lessons are an innovative opportunity for students and teachers to participate in a 45-minute interactive activity specific to an area of interest. Lessons can be hosted in a face-to face or virtual classroom setting and feature GCU curriculum designed by the university’s college experts and faculty. Students will have the opportunity to develop hands-on skills or explore advanced concepts through the web-hosted presentation.

GCU LIVE Lesson Requirements:

To take part in GCU LIVE Lessons, your classroom or learners must have internet access and the Zoom software downloaded on a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device. This can be done by visiting the Zoom Download Center in a web browser and downloading ‘Zoom Client for Meetings’. You must also have a projector screen, smart board, TV or another form of a large screen to connect your device so that all participants can view the lesson. A high-volume speaker is also highly recommended to allow all participants to hear the lesson. The use of a webcam or a device with a camera is preferred, but not required. Access to a microphone or a device with a microphone is vital for selective lessons that require a more interactive experience.

Business and Management

The accounting profession plays a vital role in the daily financial operations of running a business. This team activity gives students an opportunity to create a capital investor request for a new restaurant, understand the financial accounting side of operating a food truck and help make key financial decisions for a restaurant menu upgrade. Students will utilize a worksheet ledger to forecast cost analysis.

Each day, businesses make decisions based on consumer behaviors and demands. Math plays an important role in how companies think about analytics. Organizations use analytics to help drive their success. Within this session, students will work in teams to review business data for GCU’s GCBC coffee shop. They will create graphs and charts that look for data patterns that help make decisions for the organization.

All successful companies operate dynamic data platforms that help the organization build their brand and offer a competitive advantage in the industry. Through a blend of business and technology, businesses use their information systems to make key financial decisions as well as forecast goals and develop new business opportunities. This team activity gives students an opportunity to update an outdated data reservation system for a hotel, establish an app-based system for a gourmet food truck and create a new data system to help campus students connect through dorm and apartment living.

Developing a solid understanding of financial literacy and how it directly affects our well-being is vital in helping to understand the world around us. Both organizations and individuals make daily decisions that focus on money. These team activities give students an opportunity to explore world economies and how they influence their citizens and economic status. Additionally, they aid in understanding personal responsibilities pertaining to developing good credit and controlling debt while stressing the importance of education in relation to career earnings.

In today’s growing healthcare industry, service and care are essential to the well-being of patients and healthcare providers. This fast-paced environment relies on operational, administrative staff, as well as health information professionals who manage patient records and information. Without these important team members, hospitals would not be able to exist. This team activity gives students an opportunity to review a real industry challenge within a hospital setting. They will view the scenario through the eyes of a doctor, healthcare administrator and health information manager to formulate a solution based on information and data reports.

Experience the hospitality and culinary industries with our real-world team building activities based on hotel management and culinary event planning. This lesson promotes collaboration and decision-making skills that focus on revenue generation while being mindful of overall hotel and restaurant event operations. As the hotel GM, or even the head chef of a restaurant, your quick actions will make or break the guest’s experience.

From idea concept, to development and design, we offer a fast and fun activity that will help promote professional business-based outcomes such as collaboration, communication, efficiency and innovative thinking. Students will analyze buyer and consumer behaviors/trends to generate a successful business pitch proposal while creating a marketing plan and product logo design. They will also strengthen their presentation skills when pitching to potential investors.

Club Sports

 

Strength and conditioning, sport-specific skills and speed and agility are key elements to every elite athlete’s tool box. However, an underwhelming amount of time is spent on nutrition for high school and many college athletes. In this lesson, students will learn how to calculate their basal metabolic rate and use their activity level to determine their caloric needs for elite athletic performance. Students will also take a look at the nutritional needs and diets of some popular professional athletes and create their own meal prep ideas based on their findings.

Injuries, especially knee injuries, occur in many contact sports. Muscle imbalances are key components to how an athlete absorbs contact and deals with the physical demands of planting, turning and cutting. This lesson teaches a muscle activation warmup that builds stronger glute and hamstring muscles while limiting your chances of significant injury by properly activating your muscles for any type of competition.

This lesson will focus on your current team culture and how we can help create and instill a values-based vision with standards and expectations to enhance that culture. Students will learn how to become positive servant leaders that put the team first and hear examples of servant leadership in professional sports.

Club sports are not regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and do not have varsity status at the intercollegiate athletic level. However, club sports are organized and administered by their respective national sport governing body.

Criminal Justice, Government and Public Administration

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences provides a visual representation of different economic systems through a fast-paced, competitive activity. In this lesson, students learn the differences between capitalism, socialism and communism by applying different rules to a changing landscape.

In this exciting lesson, students will analyze evidence from a mock crime scene. Throughout the lesson students evaluate different types of forensic evidence, perform comparisons and generate scientifically sound conclusions.

This lesson will teach students about Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and how it reduces crime in our neighborhoods. Students will learn physical and social management as well as the law enforcement recommendations that seek to affect positive human behavior as people interact with their environment.

Health Care, Nursing, Medical Studies and Sciences

This lesson will expose students to the many career paths within the field of chemistry. They will be introduced to the five major disciplines of chemistry defined by the American Chemical Association and the career opportunities associated with each. By following a simple recipe, students learn about the connection between medicinal chemistry and pharmacology by participating in a hands-on lip balm compounding activity.

This lesson will teach valuable concepts from anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology and exercise physiology, utilizing the Corrective Exercise Continuum developed by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Students will learn how to assess posture, identify muscle imbalances and use the Corrective Exercise Continuum’s four-step process to combat dysfunctional postures.

Cells are the basic unit of life and make all living organisms from plants and animals to bacteria and more. In this lesson, students will learn the role of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), how it is structured, where its located and how it can be removed from a cell. During the laboratory investigation portion, students use hands-on scientific procedures to break through the barriers of a plant cell to isolate the DNA of a strawberry.

Ever wonder if you should be taking vitamins? During this lesson, students will learn the reasons why people should consider taking vitamins and the evidence in support of doing so. We discuss good food sources of vitamins along with their recommended minimum and maximum consumption guidelines. By following step-by-step instructions, students will learn how to use a capsule filler machine and create their own handmade Vitamin C pill.

Ever been to the emergency room for stitches? During this lesson, students will learn the common techniques doctors use to close wounds in the clinical setting. By following step-by-step instruction, students will perform a fundamental medical stitch known as the simple interrupted suture by practicing on bananas.

Engineering and Technology

This is an unplugged activity where students will work as an individual or in teams and receive hands-on training in the different components of Agile Project Management as they relate to developing a video game. We then tie these concepts back into the importance of agile methodologies in the field of technology.

In this activity, students will receive hands-on training in the basics of how Back-End Website Development works utilizing the programming language of Java in creating and editing a Meme Creator.

In this activity, students will first learn about a few key concepts in theoretical computer science, then experience the application of these concepts to create a simulated “live radio broadcast” of an imaginary basketball game between the Lakers and the Celtics. The simulation will be implemented in the Python programming language.

In this activity, students will take a role as a forensics investigator to catch the criminal “Ann Decover”. Students will build a case against the criminal and her accomplice and catch them before they head out of town by using a tool called Wireshark.

In this activity, students will learn how to crack password hashes using real-world scenarios via hash cat and hash-identifier

Students will be learning how to solve a relevant, real-world problem our society is currently facing. Through a 3D-modeling platform called Tinkercad Design, students will be able to design a medically-viable face shield with real-world metrics. Students will also get to see how GCU’s engineering department is responding to the COVID-19 crisis by 3D printing similar face shields for local hospitals.

Through an online circuit design platform called Tinkercad, students will engage with potentiometers, learn about analog voltages and control online servo motors. Potentiometers, as students will experience, are commonly found in household items such as light dimmers and game controllers, while Servo motors are commonly found in products like RC planes and digital cameras.

Students will use Tinkercad to build a basic circuit in order to learn and apply both Ohms Law and Kirchhoff’s Law to light up a virtual LED system. They will see how the changes in voltage will affect the outcome of their circuit. Additionally, they will be given basic knowledge of components such as batteries and power supplies, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), resistors and develop familiarity with breadboards and Arduino microcontrollers.

In this activity, students will receive hands-on training in the basics of how Front-End Website Development works utilizing the programming languages of HTML, CSS and JavaScript in creating and editing a Magic Eight Ball.

Students in this lesson will build and use hearing waveform devices to understand how tone and pitch are developed. They will see first-hand how waveforms are used to create understandable information such as vocal language. Students will then apply this knowledge to solve a real-world problem we face on a daily basis.

In this lesson, students will learn how hydropower technology functions and experience how it can be innovated. Students will get to plug-and-play with hydropower turbines and see for themselves how this renewable energy-based system works.

Biomedical engineers innovate by using dozens of engineering and medical disciplines to push the medical field forward. In this lesson, students will be using Electromyography (EMG) devices to understand muscle force testing, and how to replicate that in a robotic, prosthetic arm.

Through identifying real-world problems, students will experience a fast-paced, rapidprototyping session. Utilizing 3D printing pens and other tools, GCU will challenge your students' ability to think critically using Six-Sigma's DMAIC model while engineering solutions in a team setting. Available as beginner, intermediate and difficult levels.

Ethical Conversations

The goal of this activity is for students to understand why American diversity is essential to the progression of society and to celebrate our differences. Students will participate in a small-group activity and research ethnic groups from across America while discussing the difference between diversity, inclusion and equality.

This lesson will challenge students to look at social injustices that are prevalent in America and opportunities associated with enacting positive and lasting change. We encourage students to come with an open mind as they will be researching various ethnic groups and discussing justice, the benefits of equality and how to actively listen.

Honors

Students will take part in a leadership activity that will help identify their personality type, analyze their strengths and blind spots, understand how to leverage their strengths in various environments and communicate with different personality types.

The goal of this activity is for students to understand why global awareness is essential to the progression of society and to celebrate other cultures. Students will participate in a small-group activity to research countries from across the world and discuss the difference between surface culture and deep culture.

The objective of this activity is for students to apply creative strategies to develop an innovative mindset. During the activity, students will identify everyday items that can be combined to solve everyday problems, encouraging creativity.

The goal of this activity is for students to gain foundational skills to prepare a resume, execute a successful interview and utilize tips and tricks to help them stand out from the rest. During the activity, students will work through two handouts and engage with a GCU student about how to relate these topics to the real world.

The goal of this activity is for students to learn about their leadership style, how to leverage their strengths and implement their leadership style into their daily life. Students will take a leadership quiz, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of leadership styles and engage with a GCU student throughout the entire activity.

A collaborative activity where students will experience the different stages of developing a team and learning how to capitalize on the strengths of each team member. Students will be given the tools to develop their leadership skills through adaptive communication, positive motivation and goal-oriented persistence.

Language and Communications

Coming fall of 2020

The U.S. is becoming more multicultural than ever. People who can speak to and write for an audience of non-English speakers can find work in just about any field! GCU’s Spanish LIVE Lesson will provide students with an in-depth look at possible career options. In addition, students will learn the amazing benefits of having a bilingual brain.

For the Power of Storytelling LIVE Lesson, students will engage in a writing activity that will teach them about the application of creative writing techniques and structures. They will also learn through practice that communication is about developing and delivering information effectively.

Performing Arts and Digital Arts

The graphic design and advertising track will apply the design thinking process in a hands-on activity. Students will be tasked with creating and producing an advertising campaign and will learn how to pair the right wording with the right image to create the perfect headline.

Students will go through the design steps of research, ideation and revision to create a logo for Canyon Pizza Company in their own GCU fieldnotes journal. After an analog implementation of the design fundamentals, students will begin exploring the use of basic digital applications to create digital designs.

When making a film you first need to understand the art of storytelling. This activity will answer the question “what makes a good story?” and allows students to develop a unique voice as a storyteller while learning the importance of working as a part of a creative team. This activity will hone students' skills in observation, communication and visualization while receiving instruction on how to employ the written word to articulate dramatic and visual expression.

Social media is the perfect medium to connect with customers and drive impact for long-term business success. In this activity, students will create a social media strategy by learning to find their voice and creating digital content for their own personal branding and identity campaigns.

Psychology and Counseling

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences provides a hands-on experience where students gain a deeper understanding of the brain. We discuss the anatomy of a neuron and how impulses travel throughout the brain to the body. By observing sheep brains, students will learn about the anatomical structures and psychological processes of the human brain. Each step is explained using anatomical terms thus bringing psychology and behavioral health science to life.

Teaching and School Administration

Students will engage in an interactive, hands-on lesson with a focus on what goes on inside and outside the classroom. Teachers have control of what goes on inside their classroom, but can make a deeper impact on their students’ lives outside the classroom, so we dive deep into what happens when students leave for the day and return in the morning. Advocacy in the classroom is just as important as being an advocate for the community within the district.

Students will engage in an interactive, hands-on lesson with a focus on the various ways K-6 students learn and retain knowledge. Multiple STEM-based team building activities explore kinesthetic, audio, visual and tactile individual learning methods. The lesson concludes with a discussion on how to integrate this knowledge as a leader in a diverse classroom setting.

Students will engage in an interactive, hands-on lesson with a focus on tackling the deficiencies in early childhood literacy. This lesson teaches how to engage “littles” in developing a love for literacy through the use of music and song.

Students will engage in an interactive, hands-on lesson with a focus on educational psychology and how to effectively integrate these concepts into the teaching profession. Participants will take brief personality assessment that is followed by a STEM-based team building activity to help students explore individual personality traits.

Theology and Ministry

Students will interpret an Old or New Testament text by analyzing the Scripture’s original Greek or Hebrew along with text’s historical and literary context. Subsequently, students will learn the basics of biblical interpretation and have a method of biblical reading that can last a lifetime.
